The location

To the east of Inunaki Mountain, near the most upstream tributary of Inunaki Gawa, lies the inconspicuous Inunaki Village in Fukuoka Prefecture. Accessible solely through the Inunaki Tunnel, this easily overlooked village rests on the western edge of Wakamia, offering a secluded and mysterious destination for those who manage to find its hidden entrance. A sign reading “The Japanese constitution is not in effect past here.” In order to find the village, one must take a small side road past Old Inunaki tunnel.

The Inunaki tunnel

The 1970 story

The original story originates from 1970s. It’s about a young couple who were on their way to Hisayama when unexpectedly their car engine broke. As much as is known, they left their car and went to the forest to seek help. They supposedly entered a village that seemed abandoned. They were welcomed by a creepy old woman, who eventually murdered them with sickle. This was the first known story from this place.

Another story is about a telephone booth near the Inunaki tunnel, which supposedly get a call every night from the Inunaki village. Any person answering this call gets cursed and drowned.

🚧
The name Inunaki means Howling, or sometimes as a Dog’s bark. Rumors say that once dog was killed here in the Inunaki village, as because it barked too much.

About the tunnel

The Inunaki tunnel is around a 400m in length, but very curvy. Although it being probe to many supernatural phenomena, can extend indefinitely long. It is said that people hear scary noises, see random apparitions and experience many such things not only inside but outside the tunnel as well. The Inunaki tunnel has been not in use since the 1970s because a new tunnel was opened there in around 1974-75.

The old Inunaki tunnel was in no use and slowly with no maintenance became worse. This place is a home to various murders in history, apparently the main reason for this place to be haunted.

Why is this tunnel haunted?

The Inunaki tunnel is considered haunted primarily because of many murders. The Inunaki village is said to be one of those governed by themsleves, but in the age of Google Maps and aerial visions, the real Inunaki village is nowhere to be seen. Supposedly the real village was swallowed up by the Inunaki dam. It is said that the agents of the dam making company were sent to evict all citizens. Those who refused to move were left to drown. Many tragedies wander this dam, a married couple once jumped into this dam, on a new year’s day in 1996. In 2000 a 64 year old man was murdered and his corpse was found in this dam. The bridge through the dam is a very popular suicide spot, and has faced numerous car accidents.

Amidst all the most famous incident was that of the 1988, when a group of youth carjacked a 20 year old man going back from work and when he refused to comply they beat him till he almost died, after which they took him to the inunaki tunnel, where the drowned him in gasoline and burned fire and left him to die.

Conclusion

Inunaki tunnel has always been a place for crimes, and bad events. Negative energies supposedly roam around that area, haunted or not? that’s upto you but the place has really got many sad things going up there.

The Inunaki tunnel is also commonly known as the howling tunnel, as the name literally means that, many movies and games have been made on the same. I would personally not recommend anyone going there, not just for the haunting, but the place being so secluded, isn’t really that safe to venture into.
